Story 2. The Illumination Pill, Korean ginseng candy

My Indian astrology teacher, Mr. K. N Rao came to US for the first time when he was 60 years old. He was a highly respected astrologer, especially well known among the political circles for his accuracy and honesty in his homeland India. A life long devotee of the Divine, doing astrology almost all his life for thousands, while working as a civil servant, he never receive or ask for any rewards, as this was his way of serving God. He never married though he was a much qualified bachelor with high academic achievements as well as noble family background. He only wanted to know God. The rest were his way of giving it back what he has received from Him.

He soon became a sensation among the New Age circles of US and other western continents, which were keen on occultism and spirituality. Big names like Robert Hands, Deepak Chopra, and many others, came running to him to receive private consultations. Wherever he went, people lined up to attend his lectures and have the personal astrology readings with him. That is how I met him while I was still fresh in US life as a student. I already studied his recorded lectures on astrology and I loved them. So I flew to New Jersey from Iowa just to meet him. When I sat down with him, I didn't have anything to ask. He asked me why, then, I had come. I said, "I just wanted to meet you." He laughed shaking his head sideway in the Indian way. Then he taught me astrology there on. For the next few years, whenever he came to US, he stopped in our town and my husband and I were the lucky ones to host him for his stay and lectures.

One of the most common questions that were asked during personal consultations, were "when will I get enlightened?" He had to battle to answer that question. I don't know how he managed it. You see, he has dedicated his whole life on nothing but for that. What kind of efforts, devotions, dedications, he had put, only God knows. Here comes the most ordinary people who turned to spirituality after having gone through some personal crisis like broken home, abuse, divorce, unemployment, bankruptcy, tragedy, etc, did spiritual practices for few years and asking him about getting enlightenment… As the kindest but honest man as he was, he eluded his direct answer by giving them the Korean Ginseng candy which he liked, saying that they are "the illumination pills." I still do not know why he called the candy as he did but he loved it when I offered him. I guessed it helped to supplement his energy when he couldn't get enough of the proper vegetarian foods like in India whenever he was away.

Could it be from his influence, or from my own inborn inaptitude? The word "enlightenment" was always too big of thing for me to even causally mention it, not to mention of attaining it myself. The enlightenment like how the Shakyamuni Buddha attained it under the Bodhi tree, after seating for 7 days without moving, after going through what he had gone through before, I dared not even dream about it knowing so well of my own shortcomings. Wishing to go heaven or the Western Paradise of pure land Buddhism after I die, also was not my interest. It was more important for me that the life I live here while I am alive, gives me more clarity, strength, wisdom and direction so that I will know what to do, I will know how to live harmoniously without feeling confusion, pain, struggle. I found my solace from the Indian astrology that is called "Jyotish"; meaning "light of life" with its power to see the past, the present and the future, to help us find light in the darkness of life. True Jyotish is not fortune telling that feeds our materialistic desires and curiosity. But, it is a divine science to help us to see our divine nature so that we can function as the best human being as we can be in the midst of ordinary life we live. If we reach Heaven, after we are dead, then it become bonus but then how do we know where we will be. There is no way to probe that. What is more important is how to live well and be happy here and now. Jyotish can shine the light for us.

It is common misconception of many people—I was one of them—to think that enlightenment as sudden and final spiritual achievement of our human spirit to be free from the eternal cycles of life and death. Enlightenment is not about acquiring but about growing. It is a process that happens gradually in the stretch of long time and space, while constantly refining our characters, reflecting our appropriateness in learning to be a better human being in the present life we have. If someone condemns others' religion, lifestyles or despises others' cultures, races, because it is different or contrasts to their own beliefs, then s/he is already making grave mistake to fall into darkness of the soul. Like how a Zen master would put it, "there's million times of small enlightenment, one of big Enlightenment." Small realizations are numerous, no big deal. Broadening our understanding, our reach, bit by bit every day, here and now, is the prerequisite process to enlighten us gradually, until we can become completely enlightened one day. In this era of instant gratification, many want to skip the hard parts and get everything straight away. Small realizations are claimed as big ones. Well, the best is to have one breath in, one breath out, feel the body relaxing and see the mind settling. Then the light of life will brighten our path in the Way towards enlightenment.

* In the Abode of Abundance and Joy!

Dear friends,

Welcome to the Beth’s Yoga blog!

My name is Beth Lim Bong Sook, the founding director of Beth’s Yoga in Malaysia. Overall, I am a happy and mature woman in mid-forty with much life experiences and ordinary wisdom to share. I am a lover of humanity, philosophy, religions and other wellness oriented subjects including alternative health care system. I am also a much practical and grounded person with keen interest on family, finance, relationships and other various social and global issues. My self-chosen life purpose is to help as many people as possible to live more wholesome and meaningful life regardless of their gender, religion, age, race or education and life experiences. For that I use my expertise which is Yoga, meditation and astrology.

Through the site, what I would like to do is to share my reflections and views on conscious and wholesome living in as simple and neutral tone as I can. I will translate the abstract or difficult terms of philosophy, yoga, meditation, religions and others into common man’s language by relating to stories and real life examples that can easily be found from ordinary life. By doing so, I wish to create a space in your heart for reflection and refinement; so that you can aim for more deliberate and purpose oriented life.

Every one strives for greater happiness and success. People constantly go out to look for it outside of them. However the real secrets of ever lasting happiness and well being lie inside our heart, the abode of abundance and joy. It infuses us with sheer bliss and happiness enabling us to enjoy everyday life with a childlike anticipation. We only need to turn around within to function from the source of our being, the heart. That takes constant reminder and practice. Too many people are maniacally busy and suffer with high stress without knowing what they want or where they are going. It is just a matter of time before they collapse or have nervous break-down. Before it gets too late, I wish they learn to slow down to take deeper breaths and ease the mind, so that they can find better sense of direction, meaning, rewards and fulfillment from their pursuits.

I am very excited to start our website and blog that allow better interaction with you. You are welcomed to send me feedbacks or inquiries as well. I can be reached through email or directly in Beth’s Yoga Center. I look forward to hear from you to expand our relationships, experiences and knowledge so that we can benefit and grow together in the path of excellence, enlightenment and God.

Salutation to the holy being inside your heart, Namaste!

* Story 1: The rumbling sound of the sea

My hometown Pusan in South Korea is a world-famous beach city with fine sands, clear water and well preserved grandeurs from nature and man-made. Especially in summer, the city is full of tourists buzzing with noise and colorful activities. Unlike today, however, when I was growing up, the country was still quite poor and remained relatively unknown. It was not until the mid 80’s, after the transition of ruling power from the oppressive military to a more democratic approach that the country surged to grow to the developed status as it is today. Growing up in that quiet and reserved environment, our food and needs were simple, activities and exposures were also very minimal. There were plenty of wild fields for us to run around and play the whole day. We could also go to the nearest seaside whenever we want; building sand castles, swimming or jumping around the green moss-filled rocks and harvesting clams and muzzles to bring back for mother to cook dinner.

I especially loved watching the vastness of the sea and hearing its rumbling sound. It filled my heart with a sense of awe and deep longing to leave its permanent echoes in my young spirit. The rumbling sound of sea, the smell of sea salt and the red sunset over the horizon…I wondered what will be there beyond that horizon. It seemed very near and yet so far way. I wasn’t sure where it is coming from but certain force from it kept pulling me to its direction. Its voice, its wonder, its longing never left me whatever I was doing, wherever I was. It always stayed at the back of my mind. I carried that dreamy longing into my teens and early adult life. I got fascinated with mythology, Indian mysticism, Eastern philosophy and Buddhism in where they all talk about the mystic force in different ways. The Old Testaments says we are made in the image of God. I am not a Christian but I particularly loved this part because it reminded me of our inborn novelty and holiness.

We all are born with a belief in God, whether we are aware of it or not. It is a sense of otherness, the mystery that we feel once in a while from ordinary or sometimes not so ordinary affairs from our life. Our inborn humanity demands us to find out each others’ unique way to give the name and forms to it, to express our gratitude to the mystic power. Some choose a more conventional religious approach while some others do not. For me, since my upbringing wasn’t really a religious one—my parents were busy earning living—I had difficulty relating what I was searching for with any object-related images. I preferred to say ‘Nature’ that upholds and maintains this universe in such perfect order of time and space. That peculiar feeling, longing of the unknown, the mystic land in where there is no ugly witches but only goodness and happiness are, were where I wanted to go, where we all want to belong, so that there is no tension, hatred, tragedy, conflicts, and sadness. We could feel always safe. Then we could live as the divine nature as we are. The rumbling sound of the sea in me got louder every time when my efforts to find my place in the society didn’t sail smooth. There were too much wind and tornadoes that I had to struggle through.

Then, one day, I found the sanctuary. It was readily available for me to reach all along, all this time. When I learned to meditate formally in my 20’s, I felt as though I came home. It felt so comfortable and secure. I thought the mystic land was in far away but no. It was in my heart. Whenever I felt troubled, I would close my eyes. Then I could find my composure. Even not in troubled but happy moments, I would close my eyes to settle the excitement. Not feeling anything, but I still closed my eyes because I liked it just as it is. Gradually it helped me to stop longing and instead start teaching me to live life as it comes without worrying about the outcomes. It slowly changed me inside out and outside in. From the shy and reserved girl from a small town, I dared to step out, alone to other lands, cultures, people and languages that were not my origin. Most significantly, it led me to the abode of infinite abundance and joy within me that is available in anywhere, to anyone. If you reach out your hands there, then, you will also able to discover that life is so precious and worthy of living, for everyone is special with something to offer in life. We just need to open our hearts, extend our understanding and acceptance of oneself as well as others.

Easy to say but how do you do that? You only need to turn around, to keep quiet, be still as much as you can, away from clutters, mental chatters, and distractions. Then the tiny light from within will get bigger and bigger infusing you with subtle joy and bliss. Once you taste it, then, you will remember you had lived with it all the time as a child, but forgotten as you grow, because you got busy burying the nose in the world. I have never forgotten. I continued my search to find out where it is coming from and followed its queue. Then I finally realized, in my mid forty, that it was nothing but my own inner self looking for ways to reach out to you, to the world, to the universe and God. I no longer had to feel alienated and alone. When I look into people’s eyes, I can also see the same deep oceanic peace and longing; so pure, calm and shining, especially obvious after rounds of Yoga and meditation. This is how we become close to the divine, the angels, and the immortals in the story books. Life is beautiful when you can live in tune with the mysteries in your heart. Then the mystery will unveil itself in time to enrich our life with more wisdom, abundance, happiness and joy. This is what I would like you to have also…
